The Downtown Country Club is an Outlaw Country band based in Orange, California. Inspired by such legends as Hank Williams (I-II-III), Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson, the band strives to write original tunes that offer a fresh take on classic songwriting formulas. With Brett Chapin on rhythm guitar, harmonica, and lead vocals; Stephen Mills on the upright bass; and Gabriel Ambrosius playing lead guitar, the band plays smaller venues as a trio, in the tradition of Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two. When playing larger gigs, and on their first studio recorded album, “Wine Dog City,” the band employs a drummer to provide a snare and bass drum that rolls along steadily like a freight train. This group prides itself on the quality of their lyrics, along with their steady rhythms and unique backup vocals, and hopes to carry the torch for the Americana inspired craft of country rock n’ roll song-writing. Sometimes sacrilegious, sometimes humorous, and at other times thought-provoking and heartfelt, the stories these songs contain remain almost literary; and the stripped down raw sound, while country, is more aptly coined: Outlaw. One could imagine seeing these boys open for The Highwaymen in their heyday; luckily, if you are in Southern California, you can catch them at a local bar near you. Check the website for listings, and look forward to coming out for a knee-slapping good time one of these nights.
